The stars of Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters have weighed in on Jensen Ackles’ role on the show.

The actor – best known for playing Dean Winchester in the long-running original series – is set to return as the character in a slightly different capacity.

He will narrate the show, in addition to being an executive producer and hyper-qualified Supernatural expert, to the great advantage of stars Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly.

“He was on set every day of the pilot, just like he was super collaborative, giving us notes, talking to us about the universe that we might not have known about. So that was a really good idea,” said said Donnelly. TVLine.

The Winchesters focuses on Dean and Sam’s parents, John and Mary, whose younger versions are played by Rodger and Donnelly. In the original series, the characters were played by The Walking Deadby Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Smith respectively.

Taking on the roles of John and Mary came with its own set of challenges for new actors, who had to measure up to the expectations of a very loyal fanbase.

“We have to take it very seriously. We owe the fans a lot, so we have to be there and we have to represent,” Rodger said.

As the trailer shows, The Winchesters kicks off in 1972 with a cute encounter with a side of demons for John and Mary. After saving his life, she reluctantly introduces him to her demon hunter friends Latika (Nida Khurshid) and Carlos (Jojo Fleites) and their supernatural world, but how quickly will John adapt?
