ORLANDO, Florida – These are small pests that can cause big damage – we’re talking termites.

Florida has the most termite species in the country, but we also have a pest control university to fight back.

Florida loses $1 billion each year due to termite damage.

In Apopka, University of Florida Pest Management College trains inspectors to identify infestations.

“We have some of the worst of the worst in the state of Florida,” said Faith Oi, professor of entomology at the University of Florida.

With 23 species, seven of which are invasive, Florida is the termite capital of the United States.

Warm weather favors large colonies.

The university uses a “house” as a classroom. It is the only one of its kind in the state, teaching 300 students each year to identify and treat infestations.

To keep termites out of your home, keep a 6 inch inspection gap along the slab of your home.

Also, prevent gravel or mulch from building up in the area. Minimize wood contact with the ground and don’t let irrigation spray the side of your house.

A drywood termite produces six-sided faecal pellets called “droppings.”

You should check old furniture for “droppings” before bringing it into your home.

Termites have a natural tendency to stay hidden from large animals.

Often the only proof that termites are there is the damage they produce. There could be up to a million of them living within your walls and under your house.

It is recommended that termite inspections be scheduled once a year by professionals with a “Wood Destroying Organism Inspector” endorsement on their ID card.

All termite species can be controlled, but if you need treatment, get three different quotes.
